The Family
A friend you choose to share your thoughts,
They love you as you are.
But family, both young and old,
Just think that you're bizarre.
You meet them all just once a year,
You speak about old times.
And uncle Jo tells dirty jokes,
And awful nursery rhymes.
Then aunty Daff and cousin Lil,
Start laughing with delight,
The long lost brothers see each other,
And begin to have a fight.
You start to show some photos,
Of how your child has grown,
Until uncle Bob confesses,
That his father, was unknown.
The secrets then come pouring out,
The tears are flowing fast.
Then Jack and Flo just up and leave,
They can't deal with the past.
Some friends drop in to meet the clan,
And you're sister from the South,
"Oh she's the one we've talked about."
You're foot is in your mouth.
You can pick your friends, but relatives -
Are such a different matter.
The more you know about them all,
The less you seem to chatter.
You hear aunt Daisy died last year,
It caused a lot of grief.
The nursing home made local news,
They found she was a thief.
Your friends hear all the stories,
You're dignity now waning,
Senile great aunt Ivy,
Talks about her potty training.
It's strange how friends can come and go,
Through seasons in our lives.
But even through the greatest trials
The family still survives.
